HOW TO CHOOSE A CONSULTANT FOR BUILDING YOUR HOUSE

Hello Everybody!

I am a Building Consultant, a Structural Engineer having more than five years experience in the construction field in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Date: 5 march 2020 morning time I was moving around my hometown LakhimpurKheri, Uttarpradesh.

Earning  a degree in structural Engineering has been my goal since I was in middle school.I was always around construction sites and loved to observe all the activities at site since then.

That day I stopped my bike near a construction site of a residential building . I went there  then I saw shocking wrong utilisation of resources in that construction, after enquiring with some local people and I got to know that it's a five story building project and a local contractor was doing that project.

There I felt that the construction of that residential building was not being done, as per proper design and estimate.

These are the following shortcomings.

 (I)  In that site the center to center distance between columns was very less and in some long spans columns were not used, in other words the column placement was done in a disastrous manner.

The collapse of a building could occur when structure is unstable due to inadequate numbers of columns used and at the same time providing more no. of columns can lead to drastic increase in cost, which the owner/local mason or contractor could not understand.

(ii)  The contractor also used unnecessary brick work under the plinth beam.

Brickwork can be provided under plinth for the outer wall, for retaining the soil fill but it is not mandatory to provide brickwork under plinth beams everywhere.

(III) In Plinth beams all beams were provided throughout the columns, i.e. 6 bars of 16 mm diameter.

The rebars other than the hanger bars, i.e 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom can be provided as extra bars near the ends in case of top portion and at the center in case of bottom bars, there is no need to provide them all through.

If you want to know more about the concept of columns position you can see previous videos.

At last to overcome all these defects or losses you need to hire a qualified quality consultant rather than a local contractor having few years experience.

Qualification matters as well as Experience.

Thank you

Explanatory Example for the Calculation of Dead Load of Masonry Walls as...

STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS OF A BUILDING IN A 20 X 36 PLOT: PART-1

  1. What is a Structural Drawing: After the completion of the Architectural Plan of Building the next step is creation of the structural drawings, it can be defined as a drawing which contains the details of all the structural members of the building,
An Architectural Drawing or a Floor Plan contains the dimensions and positioning of all the rooms and components of a particular floor in a building.
If you want to view a description of the architectural plan of the building, click this link to our Youtube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL43QYS7rKc
  1. Why is it required: It is required because before constructing any building we need to know the sizes of different structural members like beam, column, foundation, slab, staircase etc. Also we need to know the layout (where they will be placed) and the reinforcement schedule (schedule of reinforcement bars or rebars).
  2. What will happen if we do construction without any structural drawing :  A structural Engineer prepares these structural drawings after proper calculation of all the loads to be considered in that particular zone where the building is going to be constructed as per the latest standard codal provisions. Examples of these loads are dead load, live load, Seismic load, Wind Load etc. It is also taken care that any structural member size and reinforcement (for RCC Buildings) is not overdone and the structure is also safe. So the safety and economy both are taken care of by the structural engineer or structural consultant in the structural drawings given.
There are many cases in which some persons don’t wish to pay the required fees of the structural consultant, then they give the structural member specification as per the experience of the contractor or any other experienced person who has constructed a building earlier. But doing so they may either compromise with the safety of the structure which can lead to disaster or else the design will add a large amount of extra cost to the project which will be much more than the fees they had to pay to any structural consultant.
For watching our video which depicts what can happen if we don’t take a structural drawing from a consultant, watch this video: https://youtu.be/SVJe7J3zD88

Why do you need to get to your 3D Building Model Done before construction of your house?
Often you get to hear that your friend or colleague is making a 3D model of his/her house. Let’s know why they choose to do so. Any person prepares a 3D model of a house to know how his/her house will look after construction. While making a 3D model you can know whatever you are thinking in your mind is possible or not.
One can also make changes as many times as he wants in the 3D model of his dream house. Think of a situation when you have made your building and you don’t like that design after construction. Like that was looking good in your imagination but now that’s failing to catch your house. Now you will have just two options. Either you live with that unsatisfactory design for the rest of our life or you make changes in your already constructed house. Both these options are certainly not good. And this is where the 3D model of the house comes into play. You can also decide whether you are looking better than what’s already in your neighbourhood. Now the question is, whether choosing to make a 3D model from any architecture or consultancy firm is a wise decision or not. So, I will suggest you to go the professional way if your budget allows it. And more importantly if you want a house that looks modern and not like those houses with plain walls on all four sides.

I have saved the gem for the last. When it comes to budget then let me tell you a secret. If you will make a 3D model of your house then you will have the proper dimension of all your designs and so your mason will finish your construction work in less time and that too with more accuracy. It will also save the time for the wastage of design material. In addition to that 3D model will tell you which material you are going to use in your design. So, you can easily calculate project cost and then you can easily decide whether it is in your budget or not.

Difference Between Tekla Structures and Tekla Structural Designer

INTRODUCTION: Tekla Structures and Tekla Structural Designer both are Software Developed by Trimble, some of the major differences between the two software are as Follows.

1. USAGE: The following are the primary differences between the two software based on their usage and the final product generated.

TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER (TSD) is a  Structural Analysis & Design Software, it is used for structural analysis and design of all structural members after the application of loads (Eg. Live Load, Dead Load, Wind Load, Seismic Load etc.) as per the standard code provisions, varying with the location of construction of building.

TEKLA STRUCTURES (TS) is a   Structural Detailing & Building Information Modelling (BIM) Software, it can be used for creating detailed model after we have the Structural design results. After finishing the BIM Model, a section can be cut from any Plane to generate Good For Construction Drawings (GEC) with detailing of rebar specifying the lap length , in case of lap splices, anchorage lengths etc.

2. CONCRETE AND STEEL QUANTITY:As we all know that during and before commencing the process of any building construction, material quantity estimate plays a vast role in the approval of the project from the owners/builders and the quality of materials to be used, as per the available finance. The major cost of any project is the cost of Concrete and Reinforcement Steel in case of RCC Building and Structural Steel in the case of Steel Buildings. So let us find out the comparison between the two software in terms of their ability to find out the quantity of concrete, Structural Steel and Reinforcement Steel.

TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER (TSD) can Calculate accurate concrete quantity, Reinforcement steel quantity with an allowance of 10 percent.

TEKLA STRUCTURES (TS) can give accurate quantity of RCC as well as reinforcement Steel quantity.

3. FORMWORK QUANTITY: In an RCC Building formwork plays an important role during the process of casting of any structural member like column, footing, beam, slab, staircase hence calculation of the quantity of formwork is necessary for procurement of the material as well as keeping the monetary stock beforehand.

TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER (TSD) can’t Calculate Formwork Quantity.

TEKLA STRUCTURES (TS) can Calculate Formwork Quantity.

4. CONSTRUCTION PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT: Construction Planning and Management t helps us to avoid any errors during the process of construction by scheduling all the activities in the process of construction like excavation, Sand filling, PCC Casting, Reinforcement Binding, Shuttering etc. Software capable of this feature enables one to manage all the activities at site properly, lets find out which among the two discussed software has this feature.

TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER (TSD) Can’t Do Construction Planning and Management

TEKLA STRUCTURES (TS) Can Perform Construction Planning an Management using this software.

A Trip to Konark Sun Temple
Date: December 15,2019,Sunday

I am one member of Team Civil Center. A Building Consultancy company from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. I was traveling together with my teammates and it was an immersive and amazing experience. So I am sharing the journey to The sun city "konark" !

We were five members and we reside at  Bhubaneswar. Konark is only 65km from Bhubaneswar so we had booked a cab at Rs. 1700. There are various options to stay at konark to all types of budget, but we planned to return back on the same day.
We started our journey from 6 am after crossing the toll gate. We took a small break to have Dahibara and coconut water as refreshment. After 15 mins we continued our journey again. The Long drive was pleasing as the wide roads were decorated with green trees on both Sides.

After 30 mins we had reached our destination, we parked our car in the government parking lot and paid 20rs.
To explore the architecture of konark we moved towards the temple by passing a handcraft street of 700 mtrs. We had booked 5 tickets of Rs. 30 each to enter the gate.
As it was Sunday hence a holiday so more than 5000 tourists were there.
Due to some natural calamity some re-construction and repair works were going on to save the architectural marvel.
The temple was designed  in the shape of a huge chariot drawn by 7 horses on 12 pairs( 24 wheels), size of 9 feet 9 inch in diameter.
I visited konark several times during my college. Guide explained me that konark wheels are used to know about time of the day. The huge wheels of konark is a major attraction of visitors  and many visitors take photographs in front of the wheels.
At the Front there are three doors and in each door the same view of Konark temple is visible like a miracle or you can say science. It indicates that the Civil Engineers and Architects at that time had so much knowledge and skills that they could create such marvels.
Nowadays visitors are banned from entering the temple as it is risky, but the outer beauty of the temple is unbelievable.
The temple is designed in such a way that the first ray of sun passes through the gate and creates a mesmerizing view.
The staircase of the monument has a riser and tread of around 1feet as ancient people were more taller and stronger than us.
After exploring the view we had lunch at Odisha hotel  and the Thali (Meal) cost Rs. 180 each.
Then we returned back to Bhubaneswar.

Watch our Journey in this Video: Team Civil Center at Konark Sun Temple
