Tiles are thin objects, usually square or rectangular in shape. A tile is a manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, baked clay, or even glass, generally used for covering roofs, floors, walls, or other objects such as table tops.

Raw materials which are used in making of the tiles are:-

  • Sand

  • White clay

  • Calcite

  • Dolomite

  • Talc.

  • Historically man has desired to create living places which are beautiful, durable and user-friendly, with that in mind ceramic tiles have been made by a man for 4000 years.

  • Beautiful tile surfaces have been found in the oldest pyramid, the rooms of Babylon and the ancient rooms of the Greek city.

  • Decorative tiles were invented in the near east where it has enjoyed a long popularity and assumed a greater variety of design than anywhere in the world.

  • During the Islamic period, all methods of tile decoration were brought to perfection in Persia.

1. DURABILITY: Tile is perfect for placement in high traffic areas. It doesn’t have strong impact resistance, but is likely to crack on dropping a heavy weight object over it.

2. LOW MAINTENANCE: Because it is so durable it doesn’t require much maintenance. Tiles are resistant to any liquid & abrasive substances, and can be wiped off easily. A sealer is applied on the tiles every 4-5yrs. Apart from these tiles require no maintenance.

3. COST EFFECTIVE: Tiles are one of the cheapest flooring surfaces available for use keeping in mind the initial purchase cost, installation and low maintenance cost. The initial purchase cost may vary with the type of tiles used, as costly tiles are also available in the market.

4. WATER RESISTANT: Tiles have a glazed protective layer on their surface that makes them impervious to water damage and strain penetration. Tiles are used in areas with more humidity and moisture such as in bathrooms.

5. ECO-FRIENDLY: Tiles are usually made of raw materials like glass, sand and clay; these materials often get combined with other recyclable materials to form ceramic tiles.

6. THERMAL INSULATOR: Tiles act as form of insulation for the house by keeping the house cold in summer and warm in winter.

7. INCREASE IN RESALE VALUE: Installing tiles in the home can be profitable in the long run as they increase the resale value of the property. Tiles making the house attractive tremendously increase the resale value of the property.

1. Very costly initial procurement.

2. Very slippery when it gets wet.

  • Tiles are laid over the concrete base with 25-30mm thick lime water i.e,         in the ratio of 1:3 is spread to serve as a bedding.

  • Tiles are cured for 12-24 hrs before laying.
